The Rotary club were educated in the use of dogs for detection of medical conditions. Geof Lambert with his dog “Buddy” demonstrated how the dogs were trained to detect if a human was about to suffer an attack of a serious illness. Dogs are trained to detect specific illnesses, in Geof’s case he has suffered diabetes for many years and his dog, Buddy, will alert him if he is likely to become comatose even in his sleep, purely by detecting Geof’s breath odour has changed. Buddy had a good prowl around our members but did not appear to detect any problems with any of us.

Geof, Buddy and Rotary President Terry posed for the photograph opposite when a cheque was presented to contribute to the costs of the Charity’s work.

Medical Detection Dogs

Geof said that they take the welfare of their Medical Detection Dogs extremely seriously. From the moment they come to us as puppies, he said, we ensure the highest standards of care for our dogs. We have a strict no kennel policy and all our dogs live in the homes of our staff or fantastic local volunteers where they are loved and cared for as part of the family. Our Bio-Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of diseases, such as cancer, in samples such as urine, breath and swabs. Our Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are trained to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour triggered by their disease* and alert them to an impending medical event. We receive no government funding for the work we do and rely entirely on the generosity of donations from trusts and the public.
